Q911: Performing Tawaaf on a Hover Board

Question

The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam performed Tawaf on a camel, so why would it not be permissible to perform Tawaf on a hover board?

Answer

Yes! The prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam did perform Tawaf on his she-camel.

But this is the problem of taking Hadith on face value, without understanding the deeper meaning.

This is why we need mujtahideen to do the research for us and we need to trust them for their efforts. May Allah reward Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Sahfi’ee, Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed Rahmatullahi Alayhim for establishing the principles of Fiqh.

In Fat’hul Baari, Hafez Ibn Hajar Rahmatullahi Alayhi has mentioned 2 reasons for the Tawaf on the she-camel.

1, He, Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, was not well. This is in the Hadith of Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu, narrated by Imam Abu Dawood Rahmatullahi Alayhi.

2, He wanted people to observe him and learn Manaasik from him. This is in the Hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir Radiallahu Anhu in Saheeh Muslim.

We need to realise that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam performed many Tawafs during his life. He had performed 4 Umrah. He had done at least 3 Tawafs in this journey of Hajjatul Wadaa’. This Tawaafe Ifaadhah was the only one he performed on a ride.

All the sahaba performed Tawaaf on foot, in that journey as well as later on throughout their lives.

Only Ummul Mu’mineen, Umme Salamah Radiallahu anha was not well in this journey of Hajjatul Wadaa. She was permitted to do Tawaf on her camel at a distance from the people.

Plus Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam’s Qaswaa (she-camel) was well trained. She didn’t dirty the Haram.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar has also written that at that time, Masjide Haram was open. It did not have walls or boundaries. So Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam allowed the camel in. Now that there are walls and doors, one should not bring animals inside.

Muhammad Ibn Abdilwahhab Najdi claimed to follow Sunnah and brought his camel inside to perform Tawaaf on it. His camel urinated, let out its droppings and dirtied the Mataaf as well as dirtying the feet and the clothes of the taaifeen.

So, we should study the whole collection of Hadith and gain insight into Masaail. The more a person’s knowledge increases, the more he feels the need to follow a Mujtahid. Because he has so much information before him that he is overwhelmed and feels compelled to trust the legends of Ijtihaad and accept their research in to the matter. He feels that Taqleed would be the most safer option.

May Allah keep us steadfast on the right track.
