Assalamualaikum, jazakallah for your query, The zikr is not done as a special ibaadah, it is done as an ilaaj, ie. cure for the disease of ghaflah in the heart, when you frequently repeat something, it sets in the mind, just like memorising the Quran, so the method of memorising does not have to be exactly the same as in the time of the Prophet saw, similarly the zikr does not have to be exactly the same.
