Q858: Gravestones: Allowed or not

Dear Mufti Saheb,

Assalamu alaikum,

Please let me know if installing a gravestone with the name of the deceased inscribed on it for the purpose of identification is Jaiz?

I am told that Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam had put a gravestone on the graves of his son Ibrahim alaihis Salam. And also a Sahabi Uthmân b. Maz`ûn. Even today we notice gravestones in many of the graves at jannatul Baqi. Jazallah khair,
Ameen.

A good question is half the answer.
You have put the words in my mouth by mentioning the 2 Hadith.

Yes there is no harm in placing some form of identification on a grave. However, one thing should be kept mind. Avoid exaggeration and copying others.

We have seen gravestones with photo of the deceased on it or picture of an angel with wings or with messages like; we’ll miss you for the rest if our lives, wonderful dad, etc

This is being a copycat which should be avoided at any cost.
