Q894: Daughter Doesn't Want to Wear Hijab

Assalamu alaikum,

Me and my daughter converted Islam 3yrs ago. We went to study in a Muslim country. My daughter wore the hijab there. Now that we are back in the States, she is not covering herself. Unfortunately she goes to private school and at the beginning she covered but now she does not. I have asked her why she has a change of heart now that she is back here. It is hard she said to explain and that she knows what Allah says on covering. Please give me some nasiha inshallah.

Answer

Walaikumussalam, mashallah upon your acceptance of Islam, may Allah bless you and your daughter with steadfastness, help u along the straight path and be with u at all times.

It is true that environment has a huge impact upon a person, and your young daughter is no exemption. At least she realises that what she is doing is wrong. Inshallah one day she will start hijab again, here are a few advices.

  1. Make special supplication for her after every salah.
  2. Deal with the matter as gently as possible, we are like the doctor, whose main concern is to find the best medicine for the patient, so he thinks very carefully and then prescribes, so think carefully what is the best approach to the situation.
  3. Tell her that if she wears hijab she will earn more respect as she will be seen as person who sticks to her principles,
  4. And that Allah will be very pleased with her, and that should be our aim in life: to gain Allah’s pleasure.

May Allah help you, and take good care of you and your family, wassalam.
