The Claim: Smoking relieves stress – Far from it

It has the opposite effect causing long-term stress levels to rise – not fall. For those dependent on smoking, the only stress it relieves is the withdrawal between cigarettes – a recent study by the London School of Medicine and Dentestry.

They looked at 469 people who tried to quite after being hospitalised for heart disease. Those who went back to old habits suffered more stress, while those who stayed abstinent for over a year had a significantly larger decrease in perceived stress . Other studies also found that smokers experience higher levels of stress and tension between cigarettes and lower levels overall when they quit.

Bottom Line! The calming effect of a cigarette is a myth – at least in the long term
